Update 2/16/08: Better Sound Quality
Part Two of a special Radio Free New York Show from December 8, 1990 commemorating the 10th anniversary of the loss of John Lennon.
2007 marks the 20th Anniversary of Radio New York International! To commemorate those five crazy days back in July of 1987, we present the final RNI transmission - Hank Hayes and Jim Nazium manning the helm for a six-hour test show that aired the evening of July 27, 1987. This is just a taste of what RNI could have been - fun, free-form entertainment, no formats, no constraints. Since this was a "test", we get a lot of music - but a lot of typical Hank and Jim insanity as well. Sadly, the dream would come to an abrupt end less than six hours later when the FCC would board The Sarah and shut RNI down for good (Part Two posed below). (stereo, unscoped - three hours)
Part Two of the final Radio New York International transmission. Hank and Jim continue to give a "taste" of what RNI would have been all about - radio without boundaries. Since this was just a "test", we get a lot of music - but also a lot of fun. Sadly, six hours after this show ended, the FCC would bring an end to the dream (Part One posted above). (stereo, unscoped - three hours)
2007 marks the 20th Anniversary of Radio New York International! Here is a "lost" gem that made it's way to us: Ivan Jefferies doing a late night show from 7-26-87. Randi Steele had been on earlier, and after midnight Allan decided to sign off the 1620 AM signal and test a back-up AM transmitter on 530 AM! Ivan is having a ball doing his thing on the high seas! Note: at the start of this tape, you can hear Allan and Ivan introducing reporter R.J. Smith of the Village Voice, whose decision to stay on board The Sarah for a few days ended up getting him arrested when the FCC ended the dream on the morning of July 28, 1987. (This aircheck graciously supplied by RNI listener Anthony Catalano) (mono - 1 hour, 30 minutes)
